About The Dales School
The Dales School is a co-educational special school for children with severe and complex learning needs. It is a North Yorkshire Local Education Authority school.
Sixth Form offers personalised generic provision for all LDD students.
Facilities & Resources
The school has a Early Years Foundation Stage classroom, six general classrooms, library, therapy room, community room, hydrotherapy pool and a multi-sensory studio. There are also two food technology areas within two of the class areas. There is also a medical room, small speech therapy facility, a general office area and a separate staffroom. Meals are prepared on a daily basis at school and served in the dining hall next to the kitchen. Every effort is made to meet pupils dietary or eating requirements ensuring a health diet.
The Activity Hall is equipped with extensive lighting and music systems which enables the school to develop its work in physical education, drama and music.
The school is set in a pleasant rural area within easy access to local shops, a number of towns and many places of interest. There are extensive playing fields to the rear surrounded by a sensory path designed by our student council. There are also two hard playground areas which are ideal for pupils to ride our range of specialist bikes, a ball court and an outside learning area. The school site adjoins that of Ainderby Steeple County Primary School. Pupils from the two schools play together at lunch times and share the adventure playground area.
The school uses two mini-buses, with rear access and clamping to carry wheelchairs. They enable pupils and students to access inclusion within mainstream schools and colleges as well as facilitating other educational visits. There is also a wide range of computer equipment and special aids within the school.
Local facilities and links
As well as the resources within school we are always keen to use local facilities. This is particularly true in relation to the provision of Physical Education and Sport. We have had the opportunity to become involved in activities offered at Northallerton School and Sixth Form College and Hambleton Leisure Centre. The Dales School is actively involved in the Special School Sports Development Programme and takes part in a variety of inter school sporting events. The Careers Education and Guidance Service also provides important support. Work experience and vocational training are extremely valuable for many of our older students. We also have links with Northallerton School and Sixth Form College, Northdale Horticulture, Foxglove Covert, Bedale leisure centre and various community facilities and colleges of further education. Regular contact is maintained with Ainderby Steeple Primary School and with other schools where there are shared placements. Contact is also maintained with organisations such as Valley Road Adult Respite (Tel 01609 533394) and The Children’s Resource Centre (CRC), which is run by Social Care. Further details about the Children’s Resource Centre, which offers respite care as well as other support, can be obtained at the school or by contacting the CRC directly on (01609) 536797.
