Widey Court Primary School
Hi, we are Widey Court Primary School and have 152 children from service families at our school. That means 152 HMS Heroes!
We have two children in Year 4 who represent all of the others and who attend the regular HMS Hero meetings in Plymouth. They are Ben and Rose.
At Widey Court we realise the pressures that service families and their children face and we want to make them feel that they are not alone and that other families are facing the same challenges as they are.
We have a weekly drop in lunchtime club called KIT which stands for Keeping in Touch. This is run on a Tueaday and Thursday lunchtime, KS1 and Foundation on a Tuesday and KS2 on a Thursday The children call in and make cards, draw pictures, make Christmas decorations and all sorts of other activities including foil spiders and grassheads! If a parent is due home they can make a Welcome Home card or they can write a letter to a deployed parent – the choice is theirs! They chat to each other and they now have a lovely support network of children in the same situation as them.
Each year we run two events for our families, a beach/surf day in the summer and a Christmas party. This year our Christmas party will be at the Crownhill Family Centre. We have booked a children’s entertainer and will have festive food and craft activities.
This year the whole school dressed up in Red, White & Blue and we took delivery of two field guns from Devonport Field Gun Association. and we are looking forward to starting our field gun club and competing in the City wide Field Gun Competition planned for next year on Plymouth Hoe.
This was a fantastic day where we were luck enough to have been supported by soldiers from the 29th Commando Regiment Royal Artillery who visited us from The Citadel in Plymouth. They put the children through their paces with drill exercises, ration cooking, a commando assault course to name but a few things! We were also visited by Devonport Field Gun Assocation who brought along a field gun that the children could race.
“Widey Court Service Family Beach Day!
A brilliant day was had by all who attended our service family beach day on Saturday 20 September. We left Widey Court in our coach at 9am and set off for Perranporth beach. It was a gloomy start to the day and quite foggy but by the team we reached Perranporth the sun was out! There were around 85 of us in total! We had a sandcastle competition and 25 of our party had a two hour surf lesson which they all thoroughly enjoyed……especially the adults! We had a BBQ lunch, beach games and then our coach delivered us safely back to Widey Court.
